This Medicine Buddha thangka painting depicts him sitting in full lotus pose on a single lotus pedestal. Additionally, he is holding the medicinal myrobalan plant held between his index finger and thumb in the right hand. Furthermore, his right hand is displaying the classic Varada “gift giving” mudra. Indeed, Buddhists believe that Medicine Buddha gave the gift of medicine to sentient life. Additionally, Buddhists believe that unwholesome karma is the source of all suffering and diligent practice is the cure.
In the left hand of our Medicine Buddha thangka painting he is holding his medicine bowl which contains the three nectars. These nectars will cure the three poisons of delusion, ill will and greed. Additionally, Medicine Buddha resides in his pure land called “Pure Lapis Lazuli”. He is a special Buddha in Mahayana Buddhist beliefs and Medicine Buddha has the power to cure all suffering.
