Our beautiful Amitayus statue is depicted in the Dhyana Mudra, holding his ambrosia vase while seated in full lotus pose on a single lotus pedestal ringed with slender, leaf-like petals between beaded rims. The statue features Amitayus with long, coiled hair dropping past his shoulders — a distinctive feature of Amitayus iconography — gathered above the crown into a topknot capped with a gold lotus-bud finial. Amitayus is the name given to Amitabha in his longevity aspect, and devotees believe Amitayus has the ability to grant them long life. In Vajrayana Buddhism, Amitabha is known as the “Buddha of Immeasurable Light and Life” — a result of the infinite merit he accumulated across countless lifetimes as the Bodhisattva Dharmakara. Similar to Shakyamuni Buddha, Dharmakara came from royalty: a great king who renounced his throne to pursue wisdom instead of earthly gains. He was ultimately given the name Amitabha, meaning “infinite light,” and he is associated with longevity, purity of perception, and a deep understanding of the phenomenon of emptiness. Amitabha is a central figure in Pure Land Buddhism, where he presides over a blissful land called Sukhavati. In the Pratyutpanna Samadhi Sutra, Amitabha encourages his followers to repeatedly say his name in meditation if they wish to join him in the pure land.
