Our Healing Buddha Thangka portrays him sitting in full lotus pose. Additionally, in his right hand he holds the myrobalan plant between index finger and thumb. This ancient medicinal herb is symbolic of Healing Buddha’s powerful cures. Additionally, the hand portrays the Varada “gift giving” mudra. The left hand of Healing Buddha is in the Dhyana mudra with his lapis medicine bowl resting in the flat palm. Inside the bowl are the three lapis nectars which neutralize the three poisons of hatred, greed and ignorance.
This Healing Buddha thangka features his eastern pure land called “Pure Lapis Lazuli”. His sutra describes the ground being made of pure lapis lazuli and the buildings constructed from the seven treasures. Additionally, his land radiates with the dark blue light of lapis lazuli. This blue light contains powerful healing attributes that will “awaken the minds of beings dwelling in darkness”.
To obtain the power of Healing Buddha, devotees only need say his name or recite his mantra. Additionally, they must have faith or his miracles will not be effective.
